Certified Biofeedback Trainer

Amita Rajadhyaksha has been successfully treating patients with biofeedback for the past 13 years. She has a strong background in science, receiving her Bachelors degree in Chemistry and Microbiology in 1974 and her Masters of Science in Biochemistry in 1976.

She spent 11 years working as an Analytical Chemist in India, for the US Navy and in California as a Histo-Cytotechnition. After she married her husband, a Psychiatrist, she wanted to work with him in helping anxious and depressed patients.

Biofeedback gives a person the opportunity to get back immediate information about muscle tension, skin surface temperature, brain wave activity, galvanic skin response (minute perspiration) blood rate and heart rate. This immediate feedback helps the person become an active participant in managing his or her own well-being. It is this immediate feedback feature, which sets biofeedback apart from other techniques that teach "relaxation" or "alpha control", and makes the learning easier for many people.

With her strong background in science, she was dedicated to finding intervention skills that were backed with research and proven to benefit patients. So in 1988 she went back to school and received her biofeedback training in San Francisco. She found it rewarding helping patients with biofeedback who were or were not receiving medication. She enjoyed working with her husband and watching their patients get better. She continues to be an active member of the Biofeedback Society.

Amita's most important role over the past few years, has been that of mother. And she brings her warm nurturing reassurance to her work with patients. Those who work with her find her calm peacefulness and gentle instruction comforting, easy to follow and very effective in changing life-long patterns.

Biofeedback is a technique in which instrumentation is used to view psychophysiological processes people are not usually aware of. Some have called it "meditation for techies" or "yuppie yoga."

The type of biofeedback that Amita uses with patients includes three instrumentation measurements:

The first measures muscle tension and relaxation by use of an electromyograph (EMG). Sensors are places on the skin over a muscle. This will then show electrical activity of that muscle. After training, a person can learn when muscle tension is beginning to increase and when and how to relax it. The use of EMG is extensively applied in general relaxation training, neuromuscular re-education, stroke, cerebral palsy, TMJ, bruxim and other syndromes.

The second instrumentation measures galvanic skin response (GSR). This measures changes in sweat responses on the surface of the skin, usually the hand. With GSR a person can get immediate feedback on his or her own arousal system. This measurement is great for training work with phobias, panic attacks, and other anxiety related disorders.

The third instrumentation measures peripheral blood flow by the temperature of the surface of the skin. Temperature feedback is used in treating migraine headaches, Raynaud's syndrome, peripheral vascular dysfunction, and general relaxation.

Using these three instrumentations, gentle guidance and educational techniques Amita uses biofeedback to reduce or alleviate most of the symptoms patients present to her.

Recent quotes from patients:

"The experience of biofeedback was extremely positive and rewarding for me."

"The results have been nothing less than amazing."

"I am sending all of my managers."

"I can't express enough thanks for your teachings, kindness and influence on me."

"Thank you for the wonderful experience you have shared with me through Biofeedback. In six weeks I feel I have truly connected with my mind and body tension." D.C. Yorba Linda, Ca.
